    Referral Process for ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is referred to as ADHD.

About 6% of the population nationwide is afflicted by this neurobiological condition. The disorder is characterised by levels of impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention that are not suitable for development. This frequently manifests as a challenge maintaining focus, paying attention, or reining in impulsive behaviour.

For some people, ADHD is persistent to the point where it interferes with daily living in the home, classroom, workplace, and social settings.

If your life is being impacted by symptoms that seem to match with ADHD, you may be considering getting an official diagnosis and accessing treatment options. If so, you may be wondering what the ADHD referral process involved.

    Online ADHD Assessment

At Positive Mind Works, we support individuals who are impacted by ADHD.

We have implemented a ‘fast track’ ADHD assessment service and are able to offer online ADHD assessments with our experienced ADHD psychiatrist. We currently have a waiting period of only 1-2 weeks.

Our books are open for this service and all we require to get started with the process is an ADHD referral from your GP.

What is involved in the diagnosis of ADHD?

For ADHD, there is no simple or quick “test”.

ADHD is a clinical diagnosis that is established using tried-and-true diagnostic interview techniques. The exclusion of other conditions that might imitate ADHD and the history, symptoms described, and behaviours seen in at least two different environments—school, work, and home—are used to make the diagnosis.

Parents, teachers, and other people who may be interacting with the individual should provide feedback for the diagnosis. The procedure will also take into account any conditions that may coexist with ADHD and the additional effects that will have on the individual. For instance, anxiety, depression, oppositional defiance disorder, learning challenges, conduct disorder and developmental status.

Due to the detailed nature of this assessment, you will require at least 2 appointments, however as many as 10 could be necessary, although rare.
