Ralph Bettesworth
Counsellor
I offer counselling that is genuine, connected, and deeply caring — focused on working together to address what matters most and build a life that feels better.
As a husband and proud father of three sons and two grandsons, I was born and raised in Northland and carry a strong connection to this place and its people. Life has given me first-hand experience navigating grief and loss, complex family dynamics, family violence, alcohol dependency, and anxiety — and that lived experience shapes the empathy I bring to every session.
I have spent over 15 years working across social services, including in the prison system, youth work, mental health and addictions, nonviolence programmes, and community wellness and support groups. I hold a degree in Clinical Counselling and draw on a broad foundation that includes coaching, teaching, and group facilitation.
My passion is helping people create healthier, happier lives — and I believe the path to that looks different for everyone. My approach is strongly person-centred, integrating Compassion-Based CBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support meaningful, lasting change. Where it fits, I love to go beyond traditional talk therapy — combining health-based activities such as personal training and mindfulness practice, or taking sessions outdoors for walk-and-talk therapy in nature.
Outside of work, I invest in my own wellbeing through quality time with family, cooking and sharing good food, and both practising and teaching meditation and mindfulness, weight training, and martial arts.
