Dr Kannan Kallapiran

Dr Kannan Kallapiran is a medical doctor who did his basic medical training in India. He worked in community psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, old-age, and forensic psychiatry before undertaking subspecialist advanced training in child & adolescent psychiatry. Having worked in QLD, NSW & WA, across both metro and rural settings, both offering face-to-face and video consultations, Dr Kallapiran is aware of the challenges in different settings. He believes in holistic care involving a healthy lifestyle along with physical and mental health. He works in a strength-based, recovery-oriented model in a collaborative fashion with clients to empower them towards living their values. His special interests included stress-related disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression. He has extensive experience working with:

  • bipolar disorder
  • schizophrenia
  • comorbid substance use disorders.
He is trained in Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and offers integrated treatment for those who are inclined towards mindfulness. With over 17 years of experience in psychiatry and 8 years as a child and adolescent psychiatrist, he is able to support individuals and their families in their journey towards recovery. He has the expertise to help families where children suffer from behavioral disorders, ADHD, ASD, anxiety, depression, and refusal to attend school. In his past role as a child psychiatrist in Sydney Children's Hospital, he worked with children with mental health and comorbid physical disorders. He is currently a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Psychiatrists and faculty of Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists. He is keenly interested in research in the prevention and early intervention of mental disorders.
